Painting & Coating

Polyurethane coating is characterised by specific properties related to the chemical and physical nature of the material. Compared to other materials such as metals, wood, or plastics, polyurethane has unique requirements that affect every stage of the process.

Distinctive chemical composition
Polyurethane is a polymeric material with a chemical structure that includes urethane bonds. This composition makes it highly resistant and versatile, but it can impede paint adhesion if not treated properly. For this reason, it is essential to use specific primers that interact chemically with the surface.
Flexible and elastic surface
Unlike rigid materials, polyurethane is often used for applications that require flexibility. The paint must therefore be compatible with these properties, avoiding solutions that could break or peel off when the material deforms. The most suitable paints are elastic paints or those with high elongation properties.
Solvent sensitivity
Unlike surfaces such as metal, polyurethane can be sensitive to certain solvents contained in paints, which could deteriorate the material. It is important to select formulations that do not react negatively with the chemical structure of polyurethane.
Surface porosity and absorption
In some forms, polyurethane can have a slightly porous surface, causing it to partially absorb the paint. This aspect requires the application of a primer or several coats of paint to achieve uniform and durable coverage.
Surface preparation
Compared to other materials, polyurethane requires more thorough preparation. The cleaning and sanding process must be carefully controlled to avoid damage, as the material may react to intensive rubbing.
Curing and thermal adaptability
During the drying phase, polyurethane coatings often require controlled conditions, including temperature. Unlike metals or wood, the polymerisation phase can be influenced by the polyurethane's degree of elasticity and reactivity to temperature changes.
